So many of our apparent choices in this digital age are predetermined for us – we are constantly being directed. Online recommendations steer us away from what is unrelated, unfamiliar and unexpected. This effectively edits out anything that challenges our pre-existing beliefs and interests.
Last month we made the journey to the US to work at the International Surfaces Event (TISE) in Las Vegas. This exhibition is the largest North American floor covering, stone, and tile industry event and is the premier, global marketplace for buyers, specifiers, and influencers to purchase products, gain design and trend information, and develop their business strategies.

During September, our Laura Greenwood brought to life her ideas for an inspirational ‘Trend Hub’ and trend display at the Flooring Show in Harrogate (in the UK), Laura was joined by Laura Trowsdale (confusing?) to ensure that the constant flow of visitors could all have their trend questions answered. Of course, many of those questions were about what would be the key colours of 2019, which patterns would be in-fashion for flooring; but other questions were about materials of the future, retail store design and even one about Exhibition stand design (we liked that one!) …
It is clear that hiking is now an extremely favoured fitness trend; even expected to surpass the popularity of yoga in 2019. With health, fitness, mindfulness and general wellbeing firmly taking centre stage in all aspects of our life, we want to understand why and how this activity can have a positive impact on us both physically and psychologically.

What does that mean to you?
Our lives are influenced by many aspects of modern life. Over the past 2, maybe 3 years our desire to be a part of a community has been growing and deepening. It might be an online community, a local one, an interest group, a cause; the one constant is the deeply rooted desire to be a part of something that connects a group of people together. And perhaps unexpectedly, young people seek this sense of sharing in a community more than most.
