During September, our Laura Greenwood brought to life her ideas for an inspirational ‘Trend Hub’ and trend display at the Flooring Show in Harrogate (in the UK), Laura was joined by Laura Trowsdale (confusing?) to ensure that the constant flow of visitors could all have their trend questions answered. Of course, many of those questions were about what would be the key colours of 2019, which patterns would be in-fashion for flooring; but other questions were about materials of the future, retail store design and even one about Exhibition stand design (we liked that one!) …
The Scarlet Opus 2019 trend stories were showcased and our space featured innovative material samples from designers across the world and some of the exhibitors at the show.

An important feature at the show was the Wool Trends Area and Wool Carpet and Rug awards, a feature created in collaboration with the Campaign for Wool and British Wool. This year’s awards demonstrated the excellence of British brands manufacturing in the UK. Selected below are some of our favorite entries:
Winning the ‘Homes & Gardens Award for Design Innovation’ was the Barefoot Quartz Citrine, Smoky and Rock by Alternative Flooring, a flooring that also relates perfectly to our Imperfect Beauty trend. Handcrafted on traditional looms, this carpet combines natural undyed wool and metallic lurex adding an element of sparkle to the deep pile. The trend which explores authenticity incorporates a handmade approach with a luxurious attitude & elements of order, glamour and rusticity as also seen in the display by Karndean at the show.
Inspired by natural landscapes and JW Turner’s abstract masterpieces, ‘Mineral Alchemy’ by Ulster Carpets mimics washers of watercolour softly blending into paper. Complimenting our Clarity trend which has a visual softness and a palette of gentle pastels and self-assured neutrals, the design which was awarded winner in the ‘Residential – Woven’ category is perfect for areas where pattern doesn’t need to be dominant with its subtle, calming aesthetic. Another winning design, this time in the ‘Innovation in Wool’ category captures this simplification by taking inspiration from looking up to the sky. ‘Horizons – Skyscape’ by Deirdre Dyson Exclusive Carpets & Rugs plays with scale and complex colour grading to create a stunning sunset vista.
The South African company, Monn, also stood out for us. Designing bespoke, woven Axminster carpets for hospitality applications, in addition to its range of luxury Wilton carpets and innovative ranges of commercial carpet tiles their stand stopped us in our tracks at the show particularly their take on terrazzo shown below our Eco 2.0 trend (top image).
There was much more to see than these highlights at the show this year, but even these few examples show that the flooring industry around the world is able to create exciting designs that are fashionable and desirable products that will appeal to the interior design industry. We’re looking forward to next years’ event.
